Chiefs Put on Notice by Rival NFL Scout Amid 0-2 Start

These Kansas City Chiefs are in uncharted territory during the Andy Reid-Patrick Mahomes era.

For the first time, Mahomes is 0-2, and has lost three consecutive games (dating back to a Super Bowl blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles) for the first time in his football career.

Worse, the Chiefs have already dropped a divisional loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, and have looked as vulnerable through the first two weeks of the 2025 campaign as they did when the green and silver confetti swirled in New Orleans.

One NFL scout argues that there are no simple fixes for the Chiefs.

“They have no one who can stretch the field vertically, especially with Xavier Worthy out,” a rival AFC Scout told me following Sunday’s Chiefs loss to the Eagles. “Until that gets fixed, their offense is going to look like it does.

“They also haven’t addressed their lack of a running game.”

Philadelphia’s running game eventually wore down the Chiefs on Sunday afternoon, and the young players the Eagles have cycled through across the roster were a driving force, including rookie safety Andrew Mukuba pulling down a pivotal Mahomes interception along the goal line that turned to be a final momentum swing.

Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense clearly are missing the speed and big-play abilities of Worthy and Rashee Rice, so it will be difficult to judge whether Kansas City can turn things around until the three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback has his full complement of weapons surrounding him.

However, the Chiefs were unable to string together sustained drives or milk the clock because Kansas City yet again lacks a dominant, bellcow of a running back. The concerns surrounding the running game won’t be solved by a star returning from injury.

The last time Reid’s Chiefs started 0-2, they finished 9-7, missing the postseason back in 2014. If Kansas City is going to avoid a similar fate this time around, Mahomes and the offense are going to need to be significantly more efficient, especially in the vertical passing game.

The road ahead is difficult, but for the first time in the Mahomes era, the Chiefs aren’t just trying to win. They’re trying to find themselves.

Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes not throwing in the towel

Through the first two games of the season, the vaunted Chiefs offense has managed just 38 points combined, and seems to lack a consistent rhythm.

However, despite losing three consecutive games, Mahomes has sights set on a bigger picture and a turnaround that Kansas City hopes begins Sunday night in East Rutherford, against the New York Giants.

“We played two good football teams and made mistakes in big moments – stuff that we’re not used to doing,” Mahomes told reporters after Sunday’s game. “But I think we’re coming together as a team, man. I mean, when you deal with adversity, it’s about how you deal with it, and obviously, this isn’t how we wanted to start. But how are we going to respond? So, I’m excited for the next few weeks to see who wants to be challenged and how we can get back and really get after it.”

These simply don’t look like the Chiefs that became a dynasty on the way to three Super Bowl victories in five appearances. Through the first two games, Kansas City ranks 25th in scoring offense, are converting just 40 percent of red-zone trips into touchdowns, and are allowing 23.5 points per game, 19th-most in the league.

It’s simply too early to panic, based on the talent across the Chiefs’ roster and the franchise’s pedigree, but if things don’t improve, it can get pretty late pretty quickly for Kansas City.
