Sleigh bells, make way for the saxophones.
Tonight’s annual Cool Yule concert at the Hammer Theatre will feature the San Jose State University Jazz Orchestra, along with members of the San Jose Jazz High School All-Stars, playing jazzy, swinging arrangements of holiday standards plus newer compositions.
Conducting the musicians will be SJSU”s Aaron Lington, a professor of music and himself a Grammy Award-winning baritone saxophonist.
“Both groups have a variety of arrangements that are new twists to holiday classics,” Lington said. “For example, ‘Angels We Have Heard on High’ will be played in the style of Neil Hefti’s famous song for the Count Basie Orchestra, ‘Cute.’
Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2 concert are available online and at the Hammer Theatre box office. Admission is $25 general, $15 for members of the SJSU community, $10 for youths 12 and under and $5 for SJSU students.
