Driver suspected of leaving fatal East Bay hit-and-run

ANTIOCH — A pedestrian died after being hit by a vehicle, and police said they arrested the person driving on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.

The collision happened Wednesday at the intersection of A Street and W. 18th Street about 6:15 p.m. A 64-year-old man died from his injuries Friday at a hospital.

Authorities did not identify him immediately Friday, pending notification of relatives.

In a statement, Capt. Matthew Koch said officers found the man down in the road and provided medical care until Contra Costa County Fire Protection District emergency personnel arrived and rushed him away in an ambulance.

Koch said the vehicle that hit the man had left the scene by the time police arrived. Witnesses later provided them with the car’s description and license plate numbers, and officers found the car in the 4400 block of Deerfield Drive.

The later found the suspected driver and took him into custody, Koch said. Police said they booked the man into the Martinez Detention Facility, but jail records did not list him Friday afternoon.

Koch said police do not believe alcohol or speeding were the factors in the collision.
