East Bay man accused of murder attempt at Marin County jail

A convicted Marin County Jail inmate tried to kill another inmate with a pair of scissors, authorities said.

The 32-year-old victim was attacked at about 2:15 p.m. Sunday, said Lt. Brennan Collins of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. The victim suffered several stab wounds, received treatment at a hospital and was returned to the jail.

The suspect, Jose Alejandro Delacruz, 27, of Richmond, was scheduled to be arraigned Friday on charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. The prosecution is also seeking penalty enhancements because of his violent criminal history.

In February, a jury convicted Delacruz of attempting to murder a pedestrian during a 2021 shooting that left the victim partially paralyzed in San Rafael. The sentencing was set for Oct. 7.

Delacruz’s defense attorney, Jon Rankin, could not be reached for comment.

The motive for the alleged jail attack is under investigation, Collins said. According to the prosecution’s complaint, the victim was Wilmar Reyes Deleon of San Rafael, who is in custody in cases involving alleged assault and other crimes.
