Former NFL QB Blames Jalen Hurts for Philly’s Offensive Struggles

There’s something about an NFL quarterback that’s not much different than a big-time politician in that, when things go wrong, all blame goes back to one source.

The buck stops here, so to speak.

In the case of the Philadelphia Eagles, that’s been quarterback Jalen Hurts throughout almost the entire time he’s been a starter and especially since he started leading the Eagles to Super Bowls.

After 2 consecutive losses and a season full of frustrations for the Eagles offense, the heat is as turned up as its ever been on Hurts. Philadelphia sits at 8-4 overall headed into a Week 14 Monday Night Football game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

According to former NFL quarterback and NBC football analyst Chris Simms, it’s Hurts who is to blame for his team’s struggles this season.

“Everybody’s blaming the coaches and the blame deserves to be on the quarterback, and that’s it,” Simms said on the “This is Football With Kevin Clark” podcast on December 4. ” … there’s a lot of unhappiness in the organization about the quarterback. Teams have found the formula to go wait, we cannot be steamrolled by the biggest, most powerful offensive line in football. We can figure out ways to stop the run because the pass game is so simple and there’s certain plays and throws that the quarterback just won’t throw.”

Simms Likes Taking Shots at QBs

Simms, the son of former New York Giants quarterback and Super Bowl XXI MVP Phil Simms, has made a post-football career of being a pretty astute observer of quarterback play for both college and NFL.

In 2018, he put 2-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson at the top of his pre-draft quarterback rankings. In 2023, he put Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud ahead of Carolina Panthers quarterback and No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young.

Before the 2024 season, he famously called Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield’s style of play in 2023 “aggressively stupid.”

“I think (in 2023) he found the happy medium about week eight or week nine or somewhere around there it was like, wait, this is aggressive — this is aggressively stupid. This is not right, let me find the fine line here but still make game-changing throws,’” Simms said June 11 in an NBC Sports podcast.

Crazy Fact: Simms Almost Died Following NFL Game

Simms was drafted by Tampa Bay in the third round of the 2003 NFL draft out of the University of Texas and played there for five seasons.

In one insane incident, Simms actually almost died on the field for the Buccaneers in 2005.

After taking several hard hits against the Panthers, he was taken off the field but decided to return to the game and led a scoring drive but continued to be in pain.

Simms was taken to a nearby hospital following the game and underwent emergency surgery on a ruptured spleen and lost five pints of blood and doctors told him if he’d have waited another hour his injuries could have been fatal.

Simms ended up playing eight seasons in the NFL for four different teams.
