Funeral services announced for Chicago police officer killed at Swedish Hospital

Funeral services for a Chicago police officer John Bartholomew, who was fatally shot at Swedish Hospital last Saturday, will be held next week in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood.

Visitation will be held 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 7 at St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church, 5649 N. Sheridan Rd., according to an obituary posted Thursday. Funeral services will be held there at 10 a.m. on May 8.

“John will be remembered as a devoted family man whose life was defined by love, loyalty, and service,” the obituary said. “He was always the first to step in and help others, known for his generosity and willingness to give without hesitation.”

Bartholomew, a 10 year veteran at the police department, died after he was shot by a robbery suspect who was taken into Swedish Hospital for an exam last Saturday.

The suspect, Alphanso Talley, pulled out a gun and shot Bartholomew and another officer after he was uncuffed and given privacy to undress and was given a gown and a blanket in a hospital room.

Bartholomew was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center and died shortly after. The other officer remains hospitalized.

Talley was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping.
