Insider Provides Huge Update on Breece Hall – Jets Future

Despite some recent struggles, the New York Jets want to retain running back Breece Hall.

Hall is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in 2026.

“From all indications, though, the Jets remain very interested in retaining Hall before he hits the open market as a free agent in March,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed on Sunday, December 28.

The big question is whether the feeling is mutual? The Jets want to keep Hall, but does he want to stay in New York?

“The flip side is Hall’s desire to return. Frustrated by four years of losing, he might decide to look elsewhere,” Cimini wrote.

What Could a Hall Contract Extension Look Like?

“Bottom line, Hall, who turns 25 next season, will be arguably the top free agent running back and could command as much as $12 million per year,” Cimini said.

A $12 million annual salary would rank No. 6 among the highest-paid running backs in the NFL, per Over The Cap. Hall would be tied with Green Bay Packers tailback Josh Jacobs, who also makes $12 million per year.

That is the high range of what Hall could command. However, he could receive considerably less than that.

On the “Flight Deck” podcast, ESPN’s Rich Cimini said he’d re-sign Hall, but he’d do it for “three years for $30 million.”

That $10 million annual salary would rank No. 9 among the highest-paid running backs in football, per OTC. That would tie Hall with Minnesota Vikings tailback Aaron Jones, who also makes $10 million per year.

Awkward Staring Contest During the Offseason Looms

The Jets are interested in keeping Hall, and Cimini said he’d extend him if it were up to him.

However, Cimini channeled his inner Meat Loaf, saying, “I would do anything for love, but I won’t do that.”

The won’t do that part is the franchise tag.

“I would not use the franchise tag. It’s gonna be $14 million. I do not think that is a prudent allotment of resources for a running back. They’re gonna have Braelon Allen coming back next year. Isaiah Davis has shown some good things in a smaller role — I would try to re-sign Breece Hall. I know he is having a late-season swoon, but I still think he is a good player,” Cimini explained.

The franchise tag numbers for the 2026 season aren’t official yet. However, the folks over at Over The Cap project the RB tag to be worth $14.14 million. That annual figure would put Hall as the fourth-highest-paid RB in football. A high price to pay.

Hall has some level of power here in these negotiations. It behooves Hall to reach the open market and find out his true value. Plus, if he is sick of the losing times with the Jets, the open waters of free agency open the door for a potential change.

Why would he take a deal from the Jets ahead of free agency? If he has his heart set on free agency, the only lever the Jets have left to pull is tagging him.

The Jets have a few options available in that department: exclusive or non-exclusive franchise tag, or perhaps the transition tag. All of those options have their pros and cons.

The moral of the story is the Jets might not have a choice. If they don’t want to risk losing him, they may be forced to tag Hall. That could keep him under contract for 2026 or extend the negotiating window to work out a long-term deal.
