Loretto Hospital data breach exposes private files of 500 people

A data breach at Loretto Hospital may have exposed the personal information of more than 500 people.

Loretto Hospital, at 645 S. Central Ave., in Austin began an investigation after it became aware of “suspicious activity involving our computer network.” The investigation found that an “unknown actor” had breached its network between Jan. 17 and Feb. 1 and copied files, according to a notice on the hospital’s website.

The personal information of more than 500 people was accessed, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said.

Additionally, the investigation found that certain data that was loaded into the electronic medical record system on Feb. 2 and Feb. 3, was not saved.

“We worked diligently to restore and capture as much data and patient records as possible during this downtime, but some records may not have been recovered or fully recreated,” the hospital wrote in the notice.

Loretto said it was reviewing the files and would notify those affected by the breach.
