Mike Lee Questioned on Supreme Court Claim by a “Brother in Christ”

MAGA-aligned U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) responded to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries‘s (D-NY) threat of the Democratic Party taking over after the midterm elections and “doing something” about the U.S. Supreme Court, which Jeffries said is dominated by “a corrupt, MAGA majority that is issuing political opinions that are designed to bolster the prospects of the Republican Party.”

Lee wrote on social media: “Democrats aren’t joking They’ll nuke the filibuster Then pack the Supreme Court Then award statehood to DC and Puerto Rico, making it unlikely that Republicans will ever win another election for decades Let’s nuke it now and just creat [sic] an even playing field.”

Political commentator Micah Erfan replied to Lee: “‘Democrats are going to pack the Supreme Court.’ My brother in Christ, you are a Senator from Utah. The Utah Republican Party just packed the State Supreme Court in retaliation for a ruling they didn’t like.”

[NOTE: Utah’s Republican Governor, Spencer Cox, signed legislation this year to add two seats to the state Supreme Court, expanding the court from five to seven justices. Cox also launched an independent investigation into Democratic Justice Diana Hagen.]

The Utah Bar Association opposes the expansion of the Supreme Court and other bills that it said would “fundamentally remake the state’s judicial system,” and Matthew Brogdon, senior director of the Center of Constitutional Studies at Utah Valley University, told The Salt Lake Tribune: “In the federal courts, every time the courts have been expanded, it was done to serve the political interests of the party in control of Congress.”
