QB Tyrod Taylor Expands on ‘Frustrating’ 0-3 Jets Start

Another week of NFL action saw another New York Jets loss. Head coach Aaron Glenn’s tenure is off to a shaky start, as his group is 0-3 through three outings.

It isn’t as if they haven’t had a chance. Week 1 saw Gang Green score 32 points and lose by two, then Sunday’s comeback effort against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers featured a walk-off field goal by the hosts.

Given the nature of the league, it’s hard to differentiate between the process and results. That’s exactly what quarterback Tyrod Taylor attempted to do following another Jets shortcoming, though.

Tyrod Taylor Dishes on a Rough Start to Jets’ Season

Speaking to the media on Sunday afternoon, Taylor admitted how mentally taxing it is to keep losing.

“It’s tough,” Taylor said. “It’s frustrating. Obviously as players, you put on your cleats and helmet, shoulder pads, strap up day in and day out to put in the work to go out there and win. You want to see those rewards. By no means are moral victories things that we accept in our locker room, but this is a young team and we’re changing in a good way. I think that although that was a loss today, that was a lot for us to learn as a team as we continue to keep shifting where this Jets team is going.”

The veteran signal-caller does see some positives in a gloomy situation, however.

“0-3 doesn’t sit well, but there’s a lot of good that we’ve done up until this point. We’ve just got to continue to keep chipping away, believing in our DNA, showing up each and every week and putting our best product out. Things will take care of themselves. It’s still early in the season. I’m proud of the guys in the locker room [for] the way they stick together. No one has wavered in confidence in one another, no one has wavered in belief in one another. It’s going to change. I know we have the right guys in the locker room to do so.”

In relief of starter Justin Fields, Taylor went 26-of-36 passing for 197 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception. Most of those yards (142, to be exact) and both scores came in the second half of play. The Jets, down 23-6 entering the fourth quarter showed some fight in a 29-27 defeat.

Glenn believes these aren’t the same old Jets. Taylor echoed a similar sentiment after Week 3.

New York Has Multiple Areas That Need Improvement Moving Forward

The issue is that in order to string together wins, New York must improve in multiple areas. There isn’t a singular thing they can do to completely reverse the course of the 2025-26 season. Glenn knew he and his staff would be playing the long game, but some early-year developments aren’t making anyone’s life easier.

On the offensive side of the ball, the offensive line remains a question mark. Ironically, there’s a case to be made that the interior has been the strongest section despite losing standout guard Alijah Vera-Tucker for the year. The tackle duo of Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou got off to a nice start to the year but has been up-and-down overall. In the Tampa Bay loss, Taylor was pressured on a whopping 44% of his dropbacks. Only an up-tempo second half helped save him.

Running the ball should be the Jets’ identity. It sure was in Week 1, when they rushed for 182 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers. After going for 107 yards to open the season, though, halfback Breece Hall had 10 carries for 29 yards in Week 2 and 9 tries for 21 yards in Week 3. Entering Monday night’s play, New York ranks 22nd in rush EPA/play per SumerSports.

Steve Wilks’ defense is also falling short. The Jets rank 29th in scoring on that side of the ball and are 22nd in yardage. They’re 28th in EPA/play. Being right down the middle in run defense (16th EPA/play) is nice, but it doesn’t stop opponents from airing it out and taking advantage of lapses in coverage. Additionally, missed tackles and penalties suggest this unit isn’t disciplined enough to play winning football.

A Monday Night Football outing against the winless Miami Dolphins could be just what the doctor ordered, but that’s only if internal improvement takes place.
