It’s official – Tom Hardy wearing a tux in new Venom film was a play for James Bond role

In the latest film Venom: The Last Dance, the director Kelly Marcel revealed she dressed Hardy’s character in a tuxedo for a very deliberate reason.

In 2021, Daniel Craig holstered his weapons and performed as Bond for the last time in No Time to Die.

Three years of rumour later, it’s still unclear which new actor will take up the spy’s licence to kill – but eyes are all on Tom Hardy.

The actor is no stranger to an action movie and appears as an unlikely superhero in Marvel’s Venom franchise in which he plays Eddie Brock.

The director of the Venom franchise revealed that she was tired of the character’s casual attire – particularly known for sweaty tops and Hawaiian shirts – and wanted to make a cheeky nod to the James Bond rumours that have been surrounding the star in the latest Venom movie.

Marcel revealed that she chose to dress hardy in a suit – a debonair choice for the Bond hopeful – and a cheeky wink to the audience.

‘There’s always been these rumours about [Tom] playing James Bond,’ Marcel admitted in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter

‘So I may have been showing what Tom Hardy’s James Bond might look like.’

The director has also been rumoured to be one of the directors shortlisted to direct the new Bond, alongside Edward Berger, David Michod, Yann Demange and Bart Layton.

‘That’s an extraordinary list to be on. I was flabbergasted,’  Marcel says. ‘There’s never been a female Bond director, and of course, when you see something like that, it’s just incredibly humbling. So I’m grateful to be mentioned alongside any of those brilliant, brilliant directors.’

Hardy isn’t the only actor rumoured to become the next Bond. The Gentleman’s Theo James, Masters of the Air’s Callum Turner, Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page, and One Day’s Leo Woodhall are all in the mix to play the iconic character.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson is still considered the favourite for the role, but in March this year, a source firmly denied his involvement when the speculation reached fever pitch.

Alongside the Bond rumours, a hot young acting couple could be our new James Bond and Bond villain.

Irish star Saoirse Ronan, 30, shared her desire to portray an antagonist that comes up against the iconic spy.

She added that her husband, Slow Horses actor Jack Lowden, whose name has already been mentioned in the mix for Bond, would also be a fabulous Bond for her to play against.

Again nothing has been confirmed by the creators and fans are still unsure when exactly the film is set to be released.
