Weather warnings remain in place across the UK with temperatures expected to plunge as low as -16C.
Yellow alerts for snow, ice and fog have been issued for today, after snow and sleet caused disruption yesterday.
Road and rail services in the warning areas are expected to face problems again on Thursday, with forecasters also warning of the potential for ice in places.
Motorists are also being urged to stick to major roads that are most likely to have been gritted.
Car insurer RAC said it has seen the highest levels of demand for rescues in a three-day period since December 2022.
Oli Claydon, spokesman for the Met Office, warned it will be ‘bitterly cold’ on Thursday night.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has extended its cold weather health alert for all of England until Sunday.
Amber alerts have been extended and will now run until January 12, meaning a rise in deaths is likely.
