Michael Bublé has made his feelings clear about Donald Trump’s calls for Canada to be annexed as America’s 51st state as he hits the country with heavy tariffs.
While hosting the 2025 Juno Awards on Sunday — Canada’s version of the Grammys — Bublé made a strong statement about the American president’s recent comments.
‘I’m a hometown kid who never left. And as I stand here and I look out at my fellow artists in a sold-out arena with millions watching at home, I’m proud to be Canadian,’ the hitmaker, 49, told the audience.
He continued: ‘I’m proud that when they go low, we go high.’
The crooner seemed on the verge of tears as he said, voice breaking: ‘Bottom line, we love this country. We love it, and when you love something, you show up for it. And we always will. We will because we’re formidable, because we’re fearless, because we don’t just acknowledge our differences — we embrace them. Because they don’t just make us stronger; they make us a hell of a lot more interesting.
‘We’re the North, the Pacific, we’re the Atlantic, we’re the Great Lakes, we’re the Rocky Mountains, and we are the wide open spaces. Folks, we are one of a kind. We are beautiful. We are the greatest nation on earth! And we are not for sale!’ he said, to cheers from the crowd.

The singer’s comments come amid growing worldwide fears about the US’s heavy new tariffs, which many believe will ignite an inevitable trade war.
In early March, the president threatened to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports.
While he backtracked on that original plan and Canada was exempt from his latest round of tariffs, as prime minister Mark Carney and business leaders reminded everyone, 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, as well as on automobiles, came into effect hours after Wednesday’s announcement.
Trump has also recently suggested that Canada’s tariffs wouldn’t be an issue if they joined the US, a suggestion that infuriated many in the country.

The US president announced the reciprocal tariffs in a major escalation of his trade war that threatens to stoke inflation and stall growth in an event he called ‘Liberation Day.’
‘My fellow Americans, this is Liberation Day,’ he said during an event at the Rose Garden of the White House on Wednesday.
‘We have been waiting for a long time. April 2, 2025, will forever be known as the day American industry was reborn, the day America’s destiny was reclaimed and the day that we began to make America wealthy again.’
