Los Angeles County Public Health Thursday, April 10, will be presenting the results of a soil sampling study done in the wake of the Eaton and Palisades wildfires.
They will be presented at a virtual town hall at 6 p.m., which will be streamed on YouTube and on the department’s social media.
Dr. Anish Mahajan, with Public Health, said Monday, April 7, during the weekly Altadena Community Meeting that the samples had been collected from various locations in and around both fire areas. They include soil from parcels that were completely destroyed, suffered partial damaged or were undamaged.
All of the samples tested were taken prior to the completion of Phase-2 debris removal. Mahajan said an additional stage of the study will be released that looks at soil taken from properties where debris removal has been completed.
The impact to soil has been of concern to those living in fire impacted areas since the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that as part of debris removal they would be removing only the top six inches of soil on properties, citing their previous experience in fire areas as the reasoning.
Residents and local agencies have pushed back on that protocol, calling for more remediation and testing.
Mahajan said results from the study will be posted on public health’s website following the virtual town hall.
Results of testing in fire areas by other entities are currently posted on the department website. Submit a question here for the town hall.
