Italy World Cup hero Fabio Cannavaro sacked by European giants after just 14 games as they axe third manager this season

ITALY legend Fabio Cannavaro has been sacked by Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb.

A statement from the club read: “Fabio Cannavaro is no longer the coach of Dinamo’s first team as of this Wednesday.

“He was on the bench of the Maksimir club for a little over three months and led the blue team in 14 competitive and three friendly matches.

“We would like to thank coach Cannavaro from the bottom of our hearts for his great effort, commitment and friendliness and wish him all the best in his future sporting and life journey.

“The team will be temporarily taken over by the current assistant coach, Sandro Perkovic, for the rest of the season.”

Cannavaro joined Dinamo Zagreb as the club’s head coach in December.

His first competitive match came against Arsenal in the Champions League where Dinamo suffered a 3-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

The 51-year-old managed seven wins, two draws and five defeats during his time at the club.

Dinamo Zagreb president Velimir Zajec insisted earlier this week that Cannavar will be in the dugout for the club’s match against NK Osijek this week.

However, just a matter of hours later, the Italian was axed.

Before moving into management, Cannavaro played for some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

He spent time in Italy with Napoli, Parma, Inter Milan and Juventus before moving to Spain to join Real Madrid.

The centre-back retired in 2011 after a short spell with Al Ahli in Dubai.

He also made 136 appearances for the Italian national team and won the World Cup in 2006.

That same year he also won the Ballon d’Or and was named The Best FIFA Men’s Player.
