Both are widely popular, especially with Gen Z – but why is cannabis in the movie like you can find it in the game?
Minecraft is incredibly popular, being the best-selling video game of all time with over 300 million copies sold and boasting a large monthly active player base of nearly 170 million as of 2024. The Minecraft movie was not initially seen as a guaranteed blockbuster and had mixed levels of anticipation leading up to its release. Skepticism surrounded its potential success due to the game’s lack of a defined storyline and its focus on creative freedom, which doesn’t easily translate into a narrative film. Many commentators compared it to other adaptations like The Lego Movie or The Super Mario Bros. Movie, noting that the success would depend heavily on the quality of the adaptation. And some players and movie goers are asking where is the marijuana in the Minecraft movie?
Cannabis does not appear in the new Minecraft Movie or the latest updates to the Minecraft game. The movie, released in April 2025, is a family-friendly live-action adventure featuring Jack Black and Jason Momoa. It tells the story of characters pulled into Minecraft’s “Overworld,” where they must save the blocky universe to return home. The film has been a box office success despite mixed critical reviews and disruptive behavior during screenings caused by viral TikTok trends.
On the gaming side, Minecraft continues to focus on expanding its creative and exploratory gameplay with biannual updates. The first major update of 2025, titled “Spring Into Life,” introduced new animal variants, plants like firefly bushes, and decorative features such as falling leaves. These additions aim to enhance the immersive experience for players without introducing any controversial elements.
While mods created by third-party developers have previously added cannabis-related content to Minecraft—such as the “Herblore Mod,” which includes marijuana-themed items—this content is not part of the official game or endorsed by Mojang Studios, the developers of Minecraft. Additionally, Minecraft has been used in educational contexts to address issues like vaping prevention but has not incorporated cannabis into its official gameplay or narrative.
