Even when you’ve seemingly got it all together like Joanna Gaines, it can’t be easy running a business empire and raising five kids.
Now Jo is revealing her biggest struggle as the mom of five, and it’s one most moms can relate to: finding something everyone will eat!
Talking to Delish, Gaines says, “I have five kids with five very different palates. They all have their specifications. One of my kids just only wants pasta. Nonstop pasta. My 16-year-old boy only wants meat and potatoes and bread.”
Chip and Joanna Gaines share sons Drake, 20, Duke, 16, and Crew, 6 and daughters, Ella,18 and Emmie, 15. While Drake is away at college, corralling the other four for a meal can be a challenge.
But there’s one meal Jo says is a winner every time.
Joanna Gaines’ Breakfast Recipe Gets Her Kids Out of Bed on Weekends
While deciding what to make for dinner is a nightly challenge, Joanna has breakfast in the bag.
“The thing that they can all agree on is anything for breakfast. We do fresh huevos rancheros. We’ll make the corn tortillas. I’ll make the ranchera sauce. Everyone will get up for it, which is hard on a Saturday because when you have teenagers, you don’t know who’s waking up when. But, they start smelling that sauce, they know.”Â
“The other thing that will get them all to the table quickly is my crunchy French toast recipe,” she adds. “No one is complaining about those two.”
While breakfast brings the whole family together, dinners are a different story. Joanna says she sets aside time to meal prep on Sundays. “I will tell all the kids, ‘Okay, what do you want?’ It’s kind of a free-for-all,” she admits. But she tries to make everyone happy. “I normally work out where each of them will get a say.”Â
Jo Plans New Menus for Magnolia Table
When Jo isn’t trying to figure out what to make for dinner for her brood, she’s busy revamping the menus for Magnolia Table, the couple’s Waco restaurant.
According to Delish, Jo constantly curates new menus for the restaurant. And her latest updates just dropped. You can check out all the mouth-watering choices here. The spring dinner menu includes “springtime salmon” and desserts like seven layer strawberry cake and Aunt Opal’s banana pudding parfait.
In Her Down Time, You Won’t Believe What Jo Loves to Do
You’d think when Joanna Gaines was done coming up with menus for both her family and her restaurant, she’d be ready to get out of the kitchen.
But think again.
In a recent Instagram post, Jo wrote, “One of my favorite things to do is bake at night, and then eat what I bakeð©ð»âð³ I love the texture of a sourdough bagelâLike an actual pillow of happiness 𥰔
Joanna also says some of her kids like to join her in the kitchen. Oldest daughter, 18-year-old Ella Rose, “loves making Syrian donuts,” according to Joanna. “We’ll do more of these traditional recipes that have a story. She loves those. We’ll do that together.”
But her biggest helper is her littlest child, Crew. The six-year-old is her constant sidekick when she’s cooking or baking.
“I can always wrangle him up anytime. He’s always by my side, so he’s really my sidekick in the kitchen, and he’s truly interested in how things work,” Gaines told Delish. “He wants to touch it, he wants to do it, he wants to stir it. So I have a little cooking buddy with Crew. If anyone’s gonna be a chef in the Gaines family, I put my money on Crew.”
