Flags in Colorado to be lowered to half-staff until Pope Francis’ funeral

Flags in Colorado will be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of Pope Francis’ funeral, Gov. Jared Polis announced Monday.

Pope Francis, 88, died Monday morning from a cerebral stroke. The date of his funeral has not been announced, but it must take place between the fourth and sixth day after his death, according to the Associated Press.

Polis’ order follows a proclamation from President Donald Trump ordering flags to be flown at half-staff until the day of Francis’ interment.

“Pope Francis was a pillar of compassion and a champion in creating a more inclusive and welcoming gospel,” Polis said in a statement, noting the pontiff’s advocacy for the environment and the humanity of LGBTQ people.

“It is my hope that Pope Francis’s legacy will continue to help the Catholic Church lead in a healing and loving manner around the world, with new members and leaders of the Catholic Church continuing his work leading the way with love and kindness,” Polis said.
