One wounded in alleged shootout with Craig police

A suspect was wounded in a shootout with Craig police Saturday morning after brandishing a gun near officers, according to a police department news release.

Police responded at about 8:43 a.m. to a house in east Craig following a report of a male suspect armed with a handgun.

They found the suspect “actively brandishing” a firearm, and he and one officer exchanged gunfire, during which the suspect was struck and injured.

Police provided emergency medical care to the suspect, who was transported to a hospital.

Craig police did not identify the suspect or officer involved and did not immediately respond to questions about charges faced by the suspect and whether anyone else was wounded in the shooting.

The officer involved has been placed on paid leave, and the shooting is being investigated internally as well as by the 14th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, police said.
