The suspect arrested after two women were shot with a crossbow has died in hospital, police say.

Owen Lawrence, 38, was arrested after the attack in Leeds on Saturday which injured two women aged 19 and 31.

Lawrence was taken to hospital with a ‘self-inflicted injury’ but on Tuesday morning police confirmed he had since died.

Police say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack.

Counter-terror police took over the investigation after social media posts written by the suspect suggested he had been fuelled by ‘misogynistic rage’.

Detectives searched through the suspect’s flat and posts on two accounts that appear to be linked to Lawrence included a rambling entry setting out an apparent plan to kill people taking part in the Otley Road Run pub crawl.

The ‘Otley Run’ pub crawl is popular with students celebrating the end of term, and the area would have been very busy with punters on Saturday afternoon.

Posts also include images of a gun and makeshift wooden knives

Lawrence also refers to victims including ‘neurotypicals and police, if I need to’, and says that he has ‘explored far right ideas’ including the conspiracy theory referred to as the great replacement.

The alleged message is said to have described the attack as ‘spree killing, mass murder, terrorism,’ with motivations of ‘revenge’ and ‘misogynistic rage,’ with the user considering ‘far-right ideas.’

His social media accounts have since been deactivated.

Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley, head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East, said: ‘Officers will continue to conduct enquiries and we ask that if anyone has information that may assist, to pass this to police.

‘We understand there are concerns around the incident, and questions about how and why this has happened.

‘Our teams are committed to carrying out an in-depth investigation to provide answers to those affected.

‘We continue to work closely with West Yorkshire Police to support the local community and thank residents for their support and understanding over the weekend.

‘Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this incident.’

One of the victims underwent life-saving surgery and she is now recovering in a stable condition. The other has been discharged from the hospital.
