A new book is describing a dramatic encounter between Hollywood stars Sylvester Stallone and Richard Gere over Princess Diana.
The book is “Dianaworld: An Obsession,” published on April 29, 2025, by author Edward White.
According to the book, the incident occurred at a house party thrown by Elton John and his partner David Furnish. John attributed the incident to something he called the “Diana Effect,” according to an excerpt of the book reprinted by People.
The ‘Diana Effect’ Caused People to ‘Completely Lose Their Minds’ Around Her, the Book Excerpt Says

The book excerpt reprinted by People describes how Stallone wanted to get Diana’s attention after she separated from her husband.
“Elton John had numerous opportunities to witness what he terms ‘the Diana Effect,’ the phenomenon whereby straight men ‘seemed to completely lose their minds in her presence.’ One such incident occurred at a house party, thrown sometime in the mid-Â1990s when Diana and Charles were already separated,” it says.
“If Johnâs memory serves him well, Sylvester Stallone arrived ‘with the express intention of picking Diana up’ and was infuriated to see her ‘in rapt conversation’ with Richard Gere,” the excerpt published by People says.

According to the excerpt, Stallone and Gere almost came to blows.
“At some point in the evening, John’s husband, David Furnish, came upon Stallone and Gere ‘squaring up to each other, apparently about to settle their differences over Diana by having a fist fight.’ Stallone said he wouldn’t have bothered turning up if he’d known that ‘Prince (expletive) Charming was gonna be here,’” the book excerpt continues.
However, the book explained that Diana was not drawn to that kind of attention. In fact, the man she did fall for appeared not to respond to the “Diana Effect.” That man was surgeon Hasnat Khan.
“Part of Dianaâs attraction to Hasnat Khan [the surgeon she was reportedly smitten with during their courtship from 1995 to 1997] seems to have been his apparent immunity to the Diana Effect. When they met for the first time at the Royal Brompton Hospital, Khan was treating the husband of Dianaâs friend in his capacity as a heart surgeon, and displayed no obvious sign of attempting to impress her or of being impressed by her. This Diana found very attractive; desire of all kinds tends to be inflamed by the obstacle of unobtainability,” the book says, according to People.
