Horrific scenes marred Espanyol’s derby match with La Liga leaders Barcelona tonight when a car drove into a crowd of fans shortly before kick-off.

Clips posted to social media show missiles being hurled at a white hatchback which appears to have its rear window smashed.

It then lurches forward and swerves into a wall of fleeing football fans as police officers with riot shields and other enraged fans run after it.

Speaking to Marca, one Espanyol fan said: ‘There were 15 or 20 people run over.’

The Spanish daily newspaper reports that Catalan police are working on the hypothesis the driver lost control and the incident was a tragic accident.

It adds that an announcement over the PA system inside the RCDE Stadium confirmed there were no serious injuries.

The match itself was briefly halted just before the 10-minute mark because of a crowd disturbance behind Joan Garcia’s goal.

Some home fans are believed to have walked out in protest at the match continuing despite the worrying incident.

This edition of the Barcelona derby is a pivotal game for both sides.

A win for Barcelona will clinch a 28th La Liga title – and their third at the home of their bitter city rivals.

Barca players were given special protection before kick-off in a bid to avoid a repeat of ugly scenes two seasons ago when they were chased off the pitch while celebrating their last league triumph.

Espanyol, currently sitting just above the relegation zone, can guarantee their safety with a win.
