Could the foul-mouthed executive Les Grossman be returning to the big screen?

Tom Cruise, who played the role in “Tropic Thunder,” has apparently had “serious conversations” about returning to the character.

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” director Christopher McQuarrie gave the details when he appeared on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast May 26 with host Josh Horowitz.

McQuarrie said the two have had many conversations on the possibility of doing a spinoff with the popular character.

“The conversations we’ve had about Les Grossman are so [expletive] funny,” McQuarrie said.

“So that’s real?” Horowitz giddily asked the director.

“[Cruise and I are] talking about it man, we’re having very serious conversations about it, and how best to do it,” McQuarrie added. “It ultimately comes down to what that character is.”

The Conversations Occurred During the Making of ‘Mission Impossible 8’

McQuarrie said the discussions began while the two were filming “The Final Reckoning.” However, there is no current idea on how the character of Grossman might be used as the main character in a future film.

“We don’t even think about the structure, we play with scenes,” he recalled. “Just to be sitting at a breakfast table, not talking about the movie we’re making for a minute, is such decompression.”

McQarrie called the discussions and joking around about potential collaborations in the future as “one of the real joys” while making “The Final Reckoning.”

“And just riffing with Tom playing Les Grossman at the table, it was one of the real joys of making this movie,” he said. “It was all the stuff we were doing, planning the future while slugging out the present.”

The 2008 comedy was about a group of actors as they acted in a big-budget war film. The film had an all star cast that included Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black and Matthew McConaughey.

Cruise received a Golden Globe nomination for his supporting role.

McQarrie & Cruise Have Frequently Worked Together

The two have a long history of collaborating, according to IMDb. McQarrie was involved with writing four of the “Mission Impossible” films, “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jack Reacher” and a few other films.

He already dished on the next “Top Gun” film and referred to it being “already in the bag” during his interview with Horowitz.

It doesn’t appear the two will stop working together anytime soon as “The Final Reckoning” had its biggest opening in “Mission Impossible” franchise history.

The film opened in time for the Memorial Day weekend along with “Lilo & Stitch,” and the two films dominated with the biggest box office record in the holiday’s history.

Cruise expressed his happiness and gratefulness for the fans in a heartfelt Instagram post.

“This weekend was one for the history books!” he wrote. “Congratulations and thank you to every filmmaker, every artist, every crew member and every single person who works at the studios.”
