Glasgow Rangers remain without a manager, but the bookmakers believe there are now just two realistic candidates to fill the role.

Philippe Clement was dismissed in February and Barry Ferguson stepped into the void to lead the club for the rest of the season.

Just six wins in 15 games did not do enough to convince the hierarchy that he was the man for the role permanently and the search for a new boss continues.

A string of names have been touted, including former manager Steven Gerrard, but it now appears that it is down to just two candidates.

Davide Ancelotti is now the odds-on favourite to be the next permanent manager at Ibrox, with former Southampton boss Russell Martin not far behind him in the betting.

While other names are still being touted, notably former Ajax manager Francesco Farioli, they are much longer odds and not considered likely candidates.

Ancelotti would be stepping into a top job for the first time in his career having worked as an assistant to his legendary father Carlo in previous roles.

The Italian worked with his dad at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton and most recently Real Madrid, so has built plenty of big club experience.

Still just 35 years old he is now ready to spread his wings and lead a club himself as Carlo takes charge of the Brazil national team.

Martin is out of work after being sacked by Southampton in December last year, having led them back into the Premier League from the Championship.

Previously he had been in charge of Milton Keynes Dons and then Swansea City.

The 39-year-old did have a brief spell with Rangers during his playing days, heading to Ibrox on loan from Norwich in 2018 and was capped 29 times by Scotland.

Ancelotti and Martin have both been interviewed by Rangers, while talks with Farioli have also been held, according to The Scottish Sun.

Another young manager, the 36-year-old has already managed in Türkiye with Fatih Karagümrük and Alanyaspor, France with Nice and most recently in the Netherlands with Ajax.

He left the Dutch giants last month after something of a nightmare end, collapsing at the climax of the season to narrowly lose the Eredivisie title.

Having put themselves in a brilliant position to win the league, Ajax won just one of their last five games, while PSV managed seven victories on the spin at the end of the campaign to pinch the title by one point.

Surrendering a nine-point lead with just five games to play represented a record collapse in the division.

A decision on an appointment is expected from the new Rangers owners in the coming days.
