OAKLAND — Police here have identified the young woman who was shot and killed here on Mother’s Day, about two weeks after her 19th birthday.
Janessa Nezbeth, 19, was shot and killed around 9:16 p.m. on May 11 by someone in a slow-moving car on the 1200 block of 17th Avenue, near International Boulevard. Police have not announced any arrests.
Authorities say Nezbeth lived in Fresno. Online postings memorializing her say she’d enrolled in Fresno City College and had recently gone on a trip to the Bay Area.
The suspect vehicle pulled up next to Nezbeth, who was on the sidewalk, and someone appeared to be briefly interacting with her before the shooting, authorities said. After being shot, Nezbeth called police, apparently giving them a fake name, and was still alive when police arrived. She was pronounced dead later at a hospital.
Nezbeth was one of two people shot and killed in Oakland that day. At about 11:52 p.m., a 30-year-old man was found shot to death outside in the 600 block of 16th Street in the Uptown district. About 45 minutes before that, in another part of town, a man was shot in the leg and survived.
