BERKELEY — One man was killed, another man was injured and six residents were displaced in a two-alarm fire Wednesday morning at an apartment building, authorities said.
The name of the man killed was not immediately released.
The fire erupted about 8:25 a.m. Wednesday at a three-story apartment building in the 2500 block of College Avenue in the Elmwood district.
Fire officials said a caller told them one resident might be trapped inside. Light smoke was showing when firefighters first got on scene and a second alarm was requested to support firefighters on scene, officials said.
Firefighters saw an elderly man on a balcony and rescued him, officials said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The man who later died was found by firefighters trapped inside his apartment, authorities said. He was brought out and was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to critical injuries, authorities said.
No other residents or firefighters were injured, said Dafina Dailey, a fire department spokesperson.
Six residents were displaced.
Officials said the building sprinkler system activated, which helped keep the fire in check. Fire officials did not say what floor the fire broke out on.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
