Boy, 16, dies after car swerving from e-bike crashes into him in Sheffield

A teenager has died and another boy was seriously hurt after a car crash in Sheffield.

The 16-year-old boy was walking along Staniford Road, Sheffield, when he was struck by the car yesterday afternoon.

He was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The boy’s family has been informed and they are being supported by specialist officers.

Before smashing into him, the grey Audi hit an 18-year-old man, who was riding an electric bike on the road.

The cyclist remains in the hospital for treatment.

Footage shows the moment before the car and the e-bike rider smash near the kerb, with both appearing to travel on the wrong direction.

After hitting the cyclist, the car then zooms towards the unsuspecting boy on the pavement.

Shortly after, the car is spotted driving away with its front damaged.

The emergency services rushed to the scene at about 4.50pm after reports of the crash.

The Audi didn’t stop at the scene, it is understood.

Detectives are investigating the collision, and two people were arrested last night.

A man and a woman, both in their 40s, were taken into custody on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Detectives asked people not share footage of the crash on social media as it could be distressing for the boy’s family.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles said: ‘We know that this incident will have caused significant concern in the local community, and tonight our thoughts are with the boys loved ones following this tragic incident.

‘Our investigation into what happened is continuing at pace and we currently have a scene in place on Staniforth Road as we continue to piece together the circumstances.

‘We are aware of speculation being shared online, as well as footage of the incident, and we ask members of the public to withhold from speculating or sharing footage which may cause distress to the boy’s family.

People reacted to the news of the fatal crash on social media.

One person paid their respects to ‘the young boy’s family,’ saying he used to live in the area and ‘this has always been a bad road.’

Another one said: ‘Incredibly sad. Condolences to the family of the young boy who needlessly lost his life. To the young man injured, I hope he makes a full recovery.’
