As “Outlander” heads into its eighth and final season, fans have already begun mourning the end of Jamie and Claireâs epic love story. But a new interview with Sam Heughan suggests the showâs upcoming farewell may not be as final as once thought. Could more “Outlander” be in the cards after season 8? Hereâs what Heughan is saying â and why fans should stay tuned.
A Possible Return? Sam Heughan Says âYou Never Knowâ
While promoting his new stage role in “Macbeth,” Heughan spoke with Deadline about closing this chapter of his TV career. But when asked about a potential “Outlander” special or follow-up, he made it clear heâs not ruling anything out.
âWho knows?â Heughan said. âI know they did that with ‘Downton Abbey’ and others. So you never know. Maybe the ginger wig is still around somewhere.â
The playful remark sent a wave of excitement through the fandom. Starz has not announced any “Outlander” continuations beyond the prequel “Outlander: Blood of My Blood,” which debuts August 8. But with Heughanâs openness â and the success of other franchise revivals â future projects remain a possibility.
‘Outlander’ Season 8 Will Arrive in 2026
Though Season 8 has wrapped filming, Starz has yet to set a premiere date. Heughan told Deadline the final season will likely air âtowards next year,â following the release of the prequel.
Production on the 10-episode season wrapped in fall 2024, with additional ADR work completed in March 2025. Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts has promised a focused narrative. âNothing that doesnât affect Jamie and Claire gets in,â Roberts told TVLine. Major questions â including the season 7 cliffhanger about Claire and Jamieâs daughter Faith â will be addressed on-screen.
The season is expected to draw heavily from Diana Gabaldonâs eighth novel, “Written in My Own Heartâs Blood,” with possible elements from later books as well.
Sam Heughan’s Talks First Post-‘Outlander’ Gig
In the meantime, Heughan is set to take the stage as the title character in “Macbeth” at the Royal Shakespeare Companyâs The Other Place, running October 9 to December 6.
âI was looking for something that would really excite me. Iâve been doing ‘Outlander’ for 11 years, and obviously it was brilliant, but I wanted something else,â he said.
Still, Heughan remains close with his “Outlander” co-stars. He recently caught up with CaitrÃona Balfe in London. âWeâre all very, very close still,â he said. âWeâre always sending each other messages.â
With the final season on the horizon â and Heughan teasing the potential for more â Sassenachs have plenty of reasons to keep watching for future news. As the actor says, âYou never know.â
