The Ontario Host Lions Club, which has served the community for more than a century, has awarded $5,000 scholarships to four graduating seniors from the Chaffey Joint Union High School District, as its final gift before closing its doors.
“These students are a reflection of everything the Ontario Host Lions Club stood for — service, leadership and community,” Mathew Holton, superintendent of the Chaffey Joint Union High School District, said in a news release. “We are tremendously grateful for this incredible gift and for the legacy of generosity the club has left throughout our schools and the entire region.”
The scholarship recipients are:
• Anthony Alvarez of Ontario’s Chaffey High School, who will attend Cal State Long Beach to pursue a degree in animation, with aspirations of becoming an animation director for Disney or Warner Bros.
• Isabelle Crist-Reyes of Chaffey High School who will attend the University of La Verne to study nursing and follow her dream of becoming a pediatric nurse.
• Yutong Jiang of Chaffey High School, who will major in psychology and hopes to become a forensic or child psychologist, with a focus on helping others improve their lives.
• Neveah Campos of Ontario High School, who will attend Christ for the Nations Institute in Texas to study ministry and who is committed to using her faith to serve and support others.
The Ontario Host Lions Club, founded in 1922, has served the community with youth programs, Student of the Month recognition and support for veterans and the visually impaired, according to the news release. The club’s many philanthropic projects have included a Christmas food basket program and elementary school literacy projects.
The Chaffey Joint Union High School District, serving Ontario, Montclair and Rancho Cucamonga and portions of Fontana, Upland, Chino and Mount Baldy, has eight comprehensive high schools, a continuation high school, an online high school, a community day school, an adult school and alternative programs.
