Although it’s rare, some actors enjoy watching their own films. John Boyega, who starred as Finn in the last “Star Wars” trilogy, also admitted he loves watching all the movies. “I’m not just interested in my performance,” he told Flaa. “I like watching all of it.” Some actors even seek out their films to watch. Samuel L. Jackson, when asked on The Graham Norton Show if he watched his movies, remarked, “Yes, I do! Religiously!”
However, many more find watching themselves on screen to be cringeworthy. Mark Hamill, who famously starred as Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars,” definitely falls into this camp.
Mark Hamill Hasn’t Watched ‘Star Wars’ Again Since 1977 Release
While appearing on the Today Show to promote his new movie, “The Life of Chuck,” the conversation turned to “Star Wars.” Craig Melvin asked him if “he was one of those folks that, every time it comes on, you stop, you watch?” Hamill replied that he’s “the opposite. I haven’t seen it since it came out.”
Everyone expressed disbelief, but Hamill maintained that he “saw it when it came out, and I just don’t revisit it. I’m not one of those people that goes, “Hey, let’s watch one of my movies!” he said, as everyone laughed.
He may not sit down to watch “Star Wars” when he’s home, but he can’t stop his kids from watching it. “My sons watch it. Especially Nathan, is a huge aficionado,” he admitted.
Carrie Fisher Had a Very Relatable Reason for Not Watching Herself in ‘Star Wars’
Hamill isn’t the only “Star Wars” star who doesn’t go out of their way to watch themselves in their films. When Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia, promoted “Bright Lights” in 2016, she discussed her hesitation about making the documentary.
âI donât like looking at myself. Iâm just getting bigger and older,” she said at the Telluride Festival (via Vanity Fair). “Thatâs not good. Meryl Streep does three movies a year, so she can watch herself age. I went from Princess Leia at 23 in a bikini to this broad. So that was distressing for me. I hate being vain and Iâm working on it â and taking classes.â
However, one “Star Wars” actor who once famously said he avoided watching his on-screen performances recently had a change of heart. On “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” in 2023, Adam Driver, who played Kylo Ren, confirmed that, “in the last couple of years, I started watching everything,” he said. “I just decided to do it because I donât want to get stuck in a right way or a set way of doing anything.”
