Mindy Kaling Explains Her Break from Acting and Hints at a Comeback

Mindy Kaling is happy calling the shots from behind the scenes—for now. Speaking as part of the Paley Media Council Series on June 5, the Emmy-nominated creator of “Never Have I Ever” and “The Sex Lives of College Girls” revealed why she hasn’t cast herself in her recent projects.

“A show literally about an Indian American family in Southern California, and if I wasn’t on that—what’s wrong with me?” Kaling said, referencing “Never Have I Ever”, a coming-of-age series loosely based on her own life.

As per Hollywood Reporter, Mindy added, “I think there is a part of me that feels a little superstitious. I’m like, these seem to have gone well, and I’m not in them, so maybe I’ll wait.”

Mindy Says She Misses Acting — and May Be Ready to Return

Though she last appeared onscreen in “The Morning Show” in 2023, Kaling admits she’s beginning to crave the creative energy of acting again.

“I miss it,” she shared. “I would like to write or co-create a show for me to act in soon.”

Kaling, a mom of three—Katherine, Spencer, and Anne—said she especially enjoys projects where she can both write and perform. She added, “Pulling double duty as writer and actor is unbelievably fun and it’s so efficient. I would love to do that again.”

Mindy Says Why Doesn’t Need to Be the Star

Even if she returns to acting, Kaling made it clear she doesn’t need to take center stage.

“I wouldn’t have to be the lead in my own show if I was writing it,” she told Variety earlier this year. “I would love to write a show for someone amazing and then play a supporting part in it.”

Mindy On Her Humble Beginnings In Hollywood

Kaling, who got her start as a writer and supporting actress on “The Office”, once had modest goals. “If I could just be a staff writer on even a terrible show, even if I could just be in the WGA and have health insurance and live in Los Angeles, I would be happy for the rest of my life,” she said.

But as her success grew, so did her ambitions. She admitted she wanted to produce and be No. 1 on the call sheet, confessing, “My idea of success keeps changing and so I’m never happy, and that’s the writer’s disease.”

Although no official new acting project has been announced, her comments suggest that we could see her back in front of the camera sooner than we think!
