Three decades after “Clueless” made plaid skirts and valley girl speak iconic, Alicia Silverstone brought along her biggest fan to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversaryâher 14-year-old son, Bear. The heartwarming mother-son duo attended a screening at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, where Bear got to experience the movie that made his mom a cultural phenomenon.
The milestone celebration brought together key cast and crew members, including Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer, director Amy Heckerling, costume designer Mona May, and casting director Marcia Ross for a special screening and panel discussion on June 7, according to People.
Silverstone shared a touching story about Bear’s early introduction to the beloved teen comedy, revealing that he first watched it at age 5 during an outdoor screening. While she acknowledged the film might not be entirely appropriate for young children, the circumstances made it acceptable since he couldn’t fully understand the content on the big screen.
Bear’s Sweet Reaction to Mom’s Famous Role
The most adorable takeaway from Bear’s first viewing wasn’t the fashion or memorable quotes, but rather the romantic ending. “The only thing he took away was the kiss at the end. He started kissing me more. It was so sweet,” Silverstone told People at the event. “And I think he liked it. And then he’s liked it all along. I think he really likes this film.”
Bear has since become a genuine fan, having watched “Clueless” approximately four times, according to his own count. His appreciation for his mother’s breakthrough role shows how the film continues to gain popularity with new generations, even within Silverstone’s own family.
The 1995 coming-of-age comedy, loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s “Emma,” launched Silverstone to stardom alongside co-stars Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, Brittany Murphy, and Dan Hedaya. The film’s cultural impact extended beyond the big screen with a television adaptation that aired from 1996 to 1999, featuring Rachel Blanchard as the lead character.
New Clueless Content on the Horizon
Fans have even more reason to get excited about the “Clueless” legacy, as Silverstone announced plans for a sequel series coming to Peacock in April. The actress will return to her iconic role as Cher Horowitz in the upcoming show, which promises to continue the story established in the original film.
“Totally buggin’⦠in the best way,” Silverstone wrote on Instagram when sharing the news, accompanied by nostalgic images from the original movie. While she remained tight-lipped about specific plot details during the anniversary event, telling People she could reveal “nothing” about the television sequel, director Amy Heckerling expressed her enthusiasm for the project, saying she was “thrilled to death” about it.
“Gossip Girl” creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are developing the upcoming series, with both working alongside Jordan Weiss. Heckerling will serve as executive producer along with Silverstone and original producer Robert Lawrence.
Silverstone has kept the Cher character alive through various appearances over the years, including a memorable 2023 Super Bowl commercial for Rakuten and a 2018 “Lip Sync Battle” performance featuring Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy.” When asked whether she ever imagined returning to the role, Silverstone admitted she hadn’t initially considered it until the Super Bowl opportunity proved how enjoyable revisiting Cher could be, likely paving the way for her enthusiasm about the upcoming Peacock series.
