Justin Verlander’s next chance for his first win with the Giants is slated for Wednesday night.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner is listed as the Giants’ probable pitcher for the middle game of a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians at Oracle Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m.
Verlander, 42, went on the injured list on May 22 with right pectoral tightness. He threw bullpen sessions twice last week as the team played road series in Colorado and Los Angeles. Instead of taking a minor-league rehab assignment, he’ll be stepping back into the rotation, which has a hole after the Giants’ big weekend trade.
San Francisco sent out 23-year-old lefty Kyle Harrison in the deal Sunday that landed third baseman/designated hitter Rafael Devers from Boston. The deal also included Jordan Hicks, who started the year in the Giants’ rotation but transitioned to the bullpen.
Robbie Ray is set to pitch the opening game of the series on Tuesday night after Devers’ introductory press conference. Verlander will follow in the rotation, but the Giants have not announced plans for Thursday’s game or the reunion weekend series when the Red Sox come to San Francisco. Hayden Birdsong would be their most rested starter by Thursday, followed by Logan Webb and Landen Roupp, who only went 1 2/3 innings and gave up six runs in Saturday’s blowout loss to the Dodgers.
Verlander (0-3) has a 4.33 earned-run average over 52 innings in 10 starts this season. He has struck out 41 batters and walked 21.
