‘Superman’ Star Has Strong Message for Actors Who Turn on Their Superhero Movies

After starring in the critically acclaimed series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” many people were surprised when Rachel Brosnahan chose a superhero movie to make next. After all, the Golden Globe and Emmy-winning actress could have her pick of characters. But, despite the backlash that superhero films have received in the last several years, Brosnahan couldn’t be more excited to play “Superman’s” Lois Lane.

“It’s not unlike Shakespeare. Where these iconic roles get taken on over and over and over again by new actors, and they get made their own,” she told “Extra.” “So I feel like I’m standing on the shoulders of giants in this part. And, hopefully, can make them proud, and all the fans proud.”

The actress is proud to play a role made popular by Phyllis Coates, Margot Kidder, Amy Adams, and others. She also has a strong opinion about those who star in comic book films and later disavow them.

Rachel Brosnahan Throws Shade at Actors Who Diss Comic Book Movies: ‘Do It or Don’t’

Amanda Seyfried and “The Amateur” actress interviewed each other for the recent issue of Interview Magazine. They were chatting about how she and “Superman’s” David Corenswet were both from the Midwest.  “That’s probably why you guys got along so well, because you’re from similar places and you’re both so happy to be involved,” Seyfried commented. “That’s the thing about these movies: You can feel it when people are doing it with passion and grace and curiosity.”

The comment sparked a spirited reply from Brosnahan about comic book films.

“I don’t know why people say yes only to then turn around and complain about it,” Brosnahan told the “Mamma Mia!” star. “Look, I don’t want to [expletive] on other actors, but there was a minute where it was cool to not like superhero movies and to look back on projects like this and pooh-pooh them.”

“Do it or don’t do it, and then stand by it,” she added.

An extraordinary number of actors who have appeared in superhero films later made negative comments. It was refreshing to hear such a positive perspective.

Several Actors Have Slammed Superhero Movies After Starring in Them

Plenty of actors have starred in superhero films, whether Marvel, DC, or something else, and distanced themselves from it later. Christian Bale famously starred as Batman in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. He told GQ, “The definition of it is monotony,” of making Marvel’s “Thor: Love and Thunder.” While he also referred to the other actors as “good people,” it was clear that the experience left him unhappy.

Ryan Reynolds, as well, has poked fun at himself for his role in “Green Lantern” on multiple occasions. He even had his Marvel character, Deadpool, kill “Ryan Reynolds” before he could make the film in “Deadpool 2’s” post-credits scene.

“Superman,” starring Brosnahan, David Corenswet, and Nicholas Hoult, will be in theaters on July 11.
