The Toronto Maple Leafs have found their starting goalie in Anthony Stolarz, and with that, one trade idea has them dealing away Joseph Woll.
The website PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool lets users create their own trades. One user proposed a deal that would see the Maple Leafs trade Joseph Woll to the Utah Mammoth.
Maple Leafs acquire:
Mammoth acquire:
- Joseph Woll
- David Kampf
- 2025 fifth-round pick
The proposed deal would be an intriguing one as Toronto would acquire Ingram to be the backup goalie, while the Maple Leafs would trade Woll and also attach Kampf to the deal to clear some salary.
Toronto would acquire Ingram, who’s entering the final year of his three-year, $5.85 million deal. Ingram was part of Utah’s goalie tandem, but Karel Vejmelka took over as the starter, similar to Woll in Toronto, and could be moved. Ingram is 28 years old and fits in nicely as the Maple Leafs’ backup, while also clearing salary. He went 9-8-4 with a 3.27 GAA and a .882 SV%.
In return, Toronto would deal a fifth-round pick as well as Woll. Woll is 26 and entering the first year of his three-year, $11 million deal. Woll went 27-14-1 with a 2.73 GAA and a .909 SV%, but lost the starter’s job to Stolarz and struggled in the playoffs, which could make him a trade candidate.
The Maple Leafs would also deal Kampf, as he is part of this deal is a salary dump for Toronto. Kampf has two years left on his four-year, $9.6 million deal. He’s a fourth-line center who plays well defensively. Kampf recorded 5 goals and 8 assists for 13 points in 59 games.
Maple Leafs Could Move a Goalie
With Stolarz locked in as the starter, Toronto could look to trade from an area of need, which is goaltending.
The Maple Leafs could trade Woll and save some salary, while he would likely get a decent return for him. Meanwhile, Toronto has Dennis Hildeby, who has shown flashes in the AHL, and Artur Akhtyamov in the system as potential backup options for Toronto.
Woll has also dealt with injury problems in his career, so the Maple Leafs could look to move on from him in case of another injury.
When Woll was the starter two years ago, he suffered an injury in Game 6 and couldn’t play Game 7 against the Boston Bruins. His injury history was something the Maple Leafs wanted to figure out.
“As far as our goaltending, I’ve got faith in Joe. Now, like everybody else, there are questions. The biggest question with Joe is he’s gotten injured a lot. We have to dig into that. Sometimes that happens, sometimes bad luck happens. Is there a training issue that we have to deal with? Do we need to change something in his off-ice routine? All those things are what we have to dig into,” Treliving said.
With Stolarz as the starter, the Maple Leafs could deal one of the other three goalies to get something back.
Ingram Re-Entered Player Assistance Program
Ingram re-entered the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program back in March.
The Utah goalie said he had not been himself since his mother died of breast cancer in early December and needed to focus on himself.
“At this point in my life, I need to put my health first and take the proper time I need away to come back at 100%,” Ingram said. “Though many view the program as a resource for substance abuse, I want to recognize all that they do. I am once again privileged to have access to their network of world class health professionals to hopefully avoid long-term negative effects of putting your health second. With the program’s assistance, I look forward to getting the medical help I need and returning to a happy and healthy life.”
Ingram has played in 102 career NHL games.
