Doc Rivers Pushes Warriors to Sign Sharpshooter Free Agent

Should the Golden State Warriors look inside the Curry family for help this offseason?

According to longtime NBA head coach Doc Rivers, the answer is yes.

During a recent appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Rivers made a strong case for the Warriors to pursue Seth Curry, Steph’s younger brother and a pending free agent. Rivers didn’t just suggest it would be fun—he called it a perfect basketball fit.

“I actually think the perfect place for him would be Golden State,” Rivers said. “I don’t know if it’s possible or not…but the way they play, he fits perfect. I’ve said that for two or three years. It would be great for him.”

Golden State Searching for Shooting Help This Offseason

The Warriors have made it clear that upgrading their offense is a top priority this summer. The team’s need to add shooting and scoring firepower was highlighted after an inconsistent 2024–25 campaign, where Golden State struggled mightily from beyond the arc.

Curry could quietly solve that problem. The 33-year-old shot a league-leading 45.6% from three last season, averaging 6.5 points in just 15.6 minutes per game for the Charlotte Hornets. Even in limited action, his elite marksmanship stood out in a league increasingly defined by spacing.

Warriors Could Add a Curry to Help Curry

Seth Curry has quietly put together an 11-year NBA career with stops on nine different teams, including the Dallas Mavericks, Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets, and Portland Trail Blazers. Despite never sticking long-term, he’s consistently provided one thing: elite perimeter shooting.

And in Golden State, that might be enough.

Rivers acknowledged the family dynamic could complicate things.

“Whenever you bring it up to the family, they kind of [brush it off]…But I do think it’d be sensational.” (via The Bill Simmons Podcast)

It’s still unclear whether the Warriors would seriously pursue Seth or if he’d be open to joining forces with Stephen Curry after years of carving out his own path. But as Golden State evaluates ways to retool around its aging core, adding a low-cost sharpshooter with Curry DNA might be too good to pass up.

One thing’s for sure: if the Warriors want to return to contention, the shots have to start falling. And few free agents offer a purer stroke than Seth Curry.

A new Splash Brother? Doc Rivers thinks so.
