As we enter the throes of summer, the amount of time to watch movies and shows shifts dramatically. People would much rather be outside, hanging by the water instead of watching every âLord of the Ringsâ movie for the umpteenth time.
What people always forget is that the sun can be very overbearing. Sometimes, itâs nice just to chill out in the air conditioning. All of those back episodes of âReal Housewivesâ wonât just watch themselves.Â
Hereâs what you should be watching this weekend.
âK-Pop Demon Huntersâ (Netflix)
Korean pop meets demon hunting in this animated flick sure to bring joy to any household with kids. Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, and May Hong star as a cheery K-pop girl group called Huntrix who also double as secret demon hunters. In between shows, they fight off the supernatural forces trying to take over the world. The original concept and script come from previous Netflix movie directors Chris Appelhans (âWish Dragonâ) and Maggie Kang as well as additional script writers Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan. Itâs also a musical which makes total sense.
âFrozen: The Hit Broadway Musicalâ (Disney+)
The hit movie that spawned a musical that spawned a musical special, âFrozen,â returns to homes with the Broadway spectacular that was nominated for multiple Tonys and Laurence Olivier Awards. âFrozenâ music writers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez provided a majority of the original songs as well as the lyrics for a more fleshed out tale of icy goodness. Thereâs also a puppeteer holding up Olaf the entire time. Itâs pretty funny.
âA Minecraft Movieâ (HBO Max)
The surprise hit of the year makes its way home this week. Warner Bros. cannot have seen it coming. The Jason Mamoa, Jack Black and Danielle Brooks starring vehicle brought in almost a billion (!) dollars due in large part to the intellectual property that is âMinecraft.â However, a ton of thanks is also due to the âChicken jockeyâ meme that floated around TikTok. The hype around the trend was so much that Warner Bros. put up rowdy screenings dubbed âBlock Party Editionâ where fans were allowed to essentially do whatever they wanted. Much like the singing version of âWicked,â this helped with fan engagement.
â28 Years Laterâ (Theaters)
Who wouldâve thought a return to the franchise that helped spur a reignition of the zombie movie genre could return with full force and be as good as it is? Director Danny Boyle is ready to unleash his army of the dead with help from writer Alex Garland (âCivil Warâ) as well as Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Comer.
âJawsâ (Peacock)
Happy 50th birthday, âJaws!â Venture back to Marthaâs Vineyard in the 1975 hit that not only made Steven Spielberg a household name. It also had an impact on the entire film industry that can be felt today in terms of the following:
1). Establishing how advertising plays a major role in film releases.
2). Creating summer blockbusters.
3). Making a template for future movies – i.e. ripoffs – to play off of (âAlien,â âGrizzly,â âPiranhaâ etc).
And it made people afraid to go into the ocean. âJawsâ is one of the most influential movies around.
