New York Yankees pitcher Jayvien Sandridge racked up some frequent-flyer miles this week — but is still waiting to make his MLB debut.
The Yankees announced on June 22 that the optioned the left-handed pitcher to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. It was the second big move for the 26-year-old pitcher, who came up to provide some much-needed depth but returned to the minors without any time on the mound.
Yankees Send Jayvien Sandridge Back to Triple-A Again
As RotoWire noted, Sandridge had just been called up to the Yankees for the second time in a matter of days.
“New York called up Sandridge from the minors for the second time in less than week, but he’ll once again be returned to the minors without having made an appearance out of the big-league bullpen,” the report noted. “The Yankees haven’t announced a corresponding move, but right-hander Allan Winans is expected to be recalled from Triple-A on Monday to start the team’s series opener in Cincinnati.”
Sandridge had six appearance at Triple-A this season, allowing one run in seven innings pitched. He has been a fixture in the minor leagues in his career, sporting a 3.82 ERA over the course of seven seasons.
As SB Nation’s Jake Devin noted, Sandridge has been something of a late-bloomer.
“He was a 32nd-round prep pick by the 2018 Orioles but didnât start making real progress until being released and signing with the Reds,” Devin wrote. “He made it up to Double-A with them before linking up with the Padresâ system in 2024. A casual perusal of his track record suggests he has good stuff but doesnât know where itâs going; for his career, he has an eye-popping 13.4 K/9 rate, but an equally jaw-dropping 7.2 BB/9 rate.”
Yankees Pitching Staff Suffers Setback
The Yankees were hit with a setback earlier this week, with pitcher Ryan Yarbrough headed to the 15-day injured list with what the team called a “low-grade” right oblique strain.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone could not give an exact timeframe on when Yarborough could return to the lineup, but said the team is hopeful it won’t be a long-term setback.
“Hopefully it’s not something that keeps him down from throwing for too long,” Boone said.
As MLB.com noted, Yarbrough had been bothered since a June 13 start against Boston, with his trip to the IL leading to Sandridge’s call-up. The Yankees have more help on the way, the report added.
