Ex-College Teammate of Jets QB Justin Fields Shares Message

The New York Jets went in a new direction at quarterback this offseason.

Jeremy Ruckert, a former Ohio State Football teammate of Justin Fields, believes the green and white made the right choice.

“Yeah, super excited, I had so many people text me about it [Fields signing with Jets],” Ruckert responded. “The culture that we are setting, he is perfect for it. He is tough, he is athletic, he doesn’t care what anybody thinks about him, he is just going to go out there and ball. He has been like that his whole life. I played in college with him, like you said. We had a lot of good memories there and a lot of good winning seasons there and winning moments. He is not shy of it and we are excicted to rally behind him and get this thing rolling.”

Fields has a chance to prove he can be a franchise quarterback in the NFL. He will have a little help from his Buckeyes fraternity brothers to make that dream a reality.

That list includes Garrett Wilson, Josh Myers, and the aforementioned Ruckert.

Wilson and Myers have found success at the NFL level. Garrett is the most productive Jets wide receiver through the first three seasons ever. Myers was the starting center for the Green Bay Packers since he was drafted. That includes two playoff teams.

Ruckert, on the other hand, has not found his calling at the NFL level through three seasons.

New Offense Can Breathe New Life for Ruckert on the Jets

Believe it or not, Ruckert is the most experienced tight end on the Jets’ roster. Technically, he is tied with the new addition Stone Smartt, who is also entering his fourth professional season.

Ruckert has now taken more of a leadership role heading into 2025.

“Yeah, I think there is a fine line between trying to be that leader for the group and also getting these guys going, but also not being too arrogant. Like you said, I’ve been here for three years now going into [the] fourth, so I’ve been here the longest. I want to show these guys, especially Mason [Taylor], being such a good player coming out. It takes a certain attitude and toughness to play in this league. [Taylor] has all the talent he needs, so just unleash that and he will be great and fine for us. We are excited about our group being the group that leads the team. Coming from Detroit, where they ran their offense, a lot of 12 and three tight ends on the field. So they need to rely on us, they need to trust us, and I think we are trending in the right direction,” Ruckert explained.

Ruckert might not be the starting tight end for the Jets in 2025, but he should have plenty of opportunities to see the field.
