Tigers-Rockies Blockbuster Trade Proposal Sends All-Star to Detroit

With MLB’s trade deadline just over a month away, it is becoming clearer whether or not certain teams will be sellers or buyers. We’re only about halfway through the 2025 season in terms of games played, but the number of true contenders is starting to dwindle. The Detroit Tigers are certainly a team with Fall Classic aspirations after being eliminated in the ALDS a season ago.

For Detroit, they already have a solid pitching staff, led by CY Young candidate Tarik Skubal, a formidable and productive outfield with Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter. Still, the infield could certainly use a strong bat on the left side.

In a recent trade idea, the Detroit Tigers are linked with the struggling Colorado Rockies for third baseman Ryan McMahon. Detroit’s left side of their infield has struggled, with Trey Sweeney posting an OPS below .600. Zach McKinstry has been better at the plate, and he offers a lot of defensive versatility.

Could McMahon Be Dealt at the Deadline?

It certainly feels as if it is trending that way, as the Colorado Rockies are not contenders. McMahon signed a $70 million contract a few seasons ago, but it isn’t too much to take on with just a couple of seasons left in the deal.

In a recent article by Bleacher Report, writer Tim Kelly breaks down each “contender’s” top need on the trade market. For the Detroit Tigers, it is a player who can play either third or short:

“Still, McKinstry’s best value is his positional flexibility, so he shouldn’t prevent anyone from making an upgrade at third base if one is available. He could shift to shortstop if president of baseball operations Scott Harris lands a better option at the hot corner. The Tigers are one of the many teams who make sense as a possible landing spot for the aforementioned Suárez. If this is the year the Colorado Rockies finally part with Ryan McMahon, he could also make sense for a Tigers team that appears to be a World Series contender in a wide-open AL.”

Kelly also mentions the prospect of dealing for Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suarez, which would also be quite the upgrade. However, McMahom is no slouch at the plate.

McMahon Was a 2024 All-Star

The 30-year-old lefty third baseman represented the Colorado Rockies in last year’s mid-summer classic and has recorded four straight seasons of 20+ home runs dating back to 2021. He is certainly on track again this season as he has 12 to his name already.

Some of those home runs may be attributed to playing most of his games at Coors Field, but taking a look at his OPS+ (park-adjusted), he is pretty consistent around the 100 mark.
It is expected that the Detroit Tigers, who hold the best record in baseball, are going to make a couple of swings at this year’s deadline; it is just a matter of who and where they play. Detroit could also use another depth starter, and there have been rumblings of Edward Cabrera from the Marlins being a good fit. With the Rockies likely going to sell off what they have, McMahon is truly their best option to get a fruitful package in return.
