Shoeless Joe? More like Shoeless Jazz.
The New York Yankees infielder ran out of his shoes while scoring in the second inning Sunday, earning the new nickname in the Yankees clubhouse after their come-from-behind 4-2 win in the series finale over the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium.
The personality-loaded third baseman had an extremely impactful day by going 2 for 4 with a pair of memorable runs scored on plays at the plate. His eighth-inning triple game New York the lead 3-2, then he scored on D.J. LeMahieu’s fielder’s choice.
But it was Chisholm’s first run scored that added to his legend.
Why Is Jazz Chisholm Jr Being Called Shoeless Jazz?
If you were struggling while trying to figure out how to watch the game on Roku Channel on Sunday — the struggle was real — you could be excused for missing one of the most memorable moments of the 2025 season to date.
Chisholm is one of the fastest players on the Yankees roster, so naturally it was his dash around the bases — where he literally ran out of his shoes — that earned him the new nickname.
After legging out a two-out double, Chisholm flew around the bases on LeMahieu’s subsequent single to left field, ditching his left cleat in the process.
âThatâs what I live for. Thatâs how I grew up playing baseball,â Chisholm said, according to MLB.com. âHigh school, Little League, thatâs how I played, and I feel like thereâs no need to change.â
Left fielder Colton Cowser’s throw was into Chisholm, and Chisholm collided with catcher Maverick Handley before cutting the New York deficit to 2-1. Handley left the game as a result of the collision with an apparent injury, but Chisholm lost his right shoe after his run-in with the catcher.
âI think itâs because I was so sweaty, my socks were wet, everything,â Chisholm said. âIt just slipped straight out. Iâve never had that happen before; Iâve run out of one, but not both.â
Chisholm’s lost shoes, and his reaction, caused a stir in the dugout. Reserve outfielder Jasson Dominguez was captured tying his shoe tight after the fact, which made his teammates giggle.
“He ran right out of his shoes,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, per MLB.com. “It doesn’t surprise me.”
But Chisholm’s run scored was huge, especially since the Yanks have struggled scoring runs over the past week. Chisholm’s second-inning run was New York’s 26th run in an 10-plus-game span.
âJazz is a spark, all the way around,â New York’s Sunday starting pitcher Will Warren said, according to MLB.com. “Heâs so toolsy — heâs got the speed, he can hit, he can field. He can do it all.â
What Else Did Jazz Chisholm Do Sunday?
Chisholm is having an eventful season against the Orioles already. He injured his oblique and landed on the injured list for more than a month after hitting a double at Camden Yards on April 29.
But Chisholm’s fingerprints were all over the Yankees win Sunday. With New York trailing 2-1 in the eighth inning, he gave his team the lead on a 3-0 pitch by blasting a double off the wall, scoring Ben Rice and pinch-runner Paul Goldschmidt.
Chisholm then collided with Handley’s replacement, ex-Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez, on LeMahieu’s ground ball to shortstop that padded the Yanks’ lead to 4-2.
