The Buffalo Bills are only a month away from starting training camp, and all eyes are on the 2025 season.
Last year, the Buffalo Bills fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC title game, and this season, there is one goal for the team: finally reaching the Super Bowl.
Buffalo has been so close to reaching the big game over the last five seasons, but has been unable to get past Kansas City, which has knocked them out in four of the previous five seasons.
The Bills must ensure they are all in this season to reach the Super Bowl, but one player who has been part of their success over the last few seasons might not be on the team this fall.
Running back James Cook, a two-time Pro Bowler, is heading into his fourth NFL season, and he is doing it by playing the last year of his contract.
It’s never suitable for an NFL player to play a season with no years left remaining on a contract just in case of injury, and the best move for Cook is to get traded so he can reach a new deal before the season.
Bills Running Back James Cook Could Be Traded
It doesn’t seem likely that the Bills and Cook will reach a long-term deal anytime soon. Pete Martuneac from the Chicago Bears on SI thinks Chicago should trade for Cook before the season starts.
“Bears fans everywhere were disappointed when the Bears were unable to select running back phenom Ashton Jeanty in the 2025 NFL Draft, and their efforts to find a top-tier runner in Rounds 2 and 3 of the draft were likewise thwarted. This position thus remains a major question mark for the Bears,” Martuneac wrote. “That would change by adding Cook, who is currently unhappy with his contract situation in Buffalo. The Bears could potentially make this deal a simple swap of players, D’Andre Swift for Cook, and preserve their 2026 draft picks. Cook put up over 1,000 yards and an absurd 16 touchdowns in 2024, and he would likely give Chicago’s offense a huge boost while taking a load off of quarterback Caleb Williams’ shoulders.”
The Bears should consider calling the Bills about Cook, as Chicago needs to add a running back to their roster.
The Bears need to put enough playmakers around young quarterback Caleb Williams, and adding Cook would be a wise move.
Buffalo Should Keep Cook Until The End Of The Year
The only problem is that if the Bills trade Cook, then they will need other running backs on their team to step up, and it’s probably not the best idea to trade him this season.
The best move for Buffalo is to let Cook play this season out and then let him hit free agency next spring.
This might be one of the last few years the Bills have to reach the Super Bowl, and trading their star running back before the season starts probably won’t sit well with quarterback Josh Allen and the rest of the team.
