Trade Idea Has Rangers Acquiring $31M Star in Blockbuster

The New York Rangers are trying to be aggressive in hopes of making the playoffs next season after a disappointing year.

With New York looking to be a playoff team next season, the Rangers will look to add star players to their roster. Heavy.com has one trade pitch that sees New York acquiring Jason Robertson from the Dallas Stars.

The proposed deal would be a blockbuster, but New York would avoid giving up a first-round pick as the Rangers, instead give up three young NHL players.

New York would acquire Robertson, who’s in the final year of his four-year, $31 million deal. The star winger could be a first-line player for the Rangers and add some much-needed offense to the lineup. Robertson recorded 35 goals and 45 assists for 80 points in 82 games last season.

A big part of the trade would be Cuylle, who is part of the trade, so the Rangers don’t have to deal a first-round pick. Cuylle recorded 20 goals and 25 assists for 45 points in 80 games last season, and the 23-year-old would be a middle-six forward for the Stars.

The Stars would also acquire Othmann, who has yet to break through and be a full-time NHL player. Othmann was selected 16th overall in 2021 and played in just 22 games, recording 0 goals and 2 assists.

The Rangers would also acquire Schneider, who can be a second or third-pairing defenseman for the Stars. Dallas needs young, cheaper talent, which all three of these players are, while getting off of Robertson’s contract.

Stars Shopping Robertson

With Dallas losing in the Western Conference Finals again, the Stars are looking to shake up their core.

One name who has come up in trade talks is Robertson, despite being a star player. NHL insider Frank Seravalli of DailyFaceoff puts Robertson 34th on his trade bait board, as Dallas is shopping him, but whether or not the Stars make the move is uncertain.

“The Stars have some franchise-altering decisions to make this summer. Is Robertson one of the foundational pillars?,” Seravalli wrote. “Or is he a player they can live without? His season was down then up. The first half cost him a roster spot on Team USA at the 4 Nations. The second half he was one of the best players in the league, finishing with 28 goals and 57 points in 48 games. And then, on a team with limited cap space and a roster to fill out, what will that next contract cost? And are the Stars willing to meet it? Players like Robertson don’t come around often.”

Robertson was selected 39th overall in 2017. He’s skated in 374 career games, recording 168 goals and 226 assists for 394 points.

Rangers Trade 2025 1st Rounder

Ahead of the 2025 NHL Draft, the Rangers opted to give up their first-round pick, 12th overall, and keep their 2026 pick.

When New York acquired J.T. Miller, they traded a conditional first-rounder, which the Rangers would decide if it was in 2025 or 2026. Ahead of the draft on June 27, New York decided to keep the 2026 pick as a trade asset, according to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun.

“Rangers have officially decided on sending the 12th overall pick in Friday’s draft to Pittsburgh (the conditional 1st originally traded to Van for JT Miller, then flipped to Pitt by Van). Part of the thinking in keeping next year’s 1st Rd pick instead is that it might be a trade chip next season at the deadline if Rangers bounce back and contend,” LeBrun wrote on X.

The Rangers have just over $12 million in cap space.
