A missing Pueblo man was found dead last week on Elwood Pass in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, sheriff’s officials said.
Rodney Guilinger, 64, was reported missing on April 16 after he failed to return home from scouting hunting areas between La Jara and the New Mexico state line.
Two months later, on June 17, two hikers found a body near the summit of Elwood Pass, according to a news release from the Conejos County Sheriff’s Office.
The county coroner identified the body as Guilinger, sheriff’s officials said.
“We wish the outcome had been different,” Conejos County Sheriff Garth Crowther stated in the release. “While this is not the result we had hoped for, we are grateful to be able to bring closure to Mr. Guilnger’s loved ones.”
Guilinger’s body was found about seven miles from where he abandoned his truck off of U.S. Forest Service Road 380, sheriff’s officials said.
His truck had been stuck in deep snow near Stunner campground in Rio Grande National Forest, according to the sheriff’s office.
Guilinger’s wife told investigators that he had onset dementia and high blood pressure that had caused him to black out in the past.
