Kenny Pickett‘s contribution with the Philadelphia Eagles will hardly be remembered with much fervour; he went 1-0 as a starter in 2024 – although he lost to the Washington Commanders in a Week 16 game in which he played almost all of the offensive snaps after Jalen Hurts‘ first quarter injury.
Yet, there does seem to be some confidence in the former first round pick, deriving from an unexpected source.
Speaking on the Sports and Suits podcast, former All-Pro receiver, Diontae Johnson expressed support for the former Eagle, telling the hosts that he believes that he will win the starting job with the Cleveland Browns ahead of Week 1.
“I think they are going to roll with Kenny for right now,â Johnson said earlier this month, “… Iâve been seeing Kenny going like right now with the ones. Then, Joe will come in. I think they are probably going to roll with him just to see like heâs coming off a season with Philly and having a Super Bowl. So, I think they are going to stick with him through the preseason. Then, you know they can live with Joe and what he brings to the table.â
Does Kenny Pickett Have A Shot To Start In 2025?
Although he did not excel to some enormous degree in Philadelphia, Pickett certainly showed off his capabilities as a competent back up. Enough ability, it would seem, for the Browns to trade a fifth round pick for his services earlier this offseason.
And him succeeding with a new organization post-Eagles would fall in line with prior backups, such as Gardner Minshew, who took the rebuilding Indianapolis Colts within a singular play of reaching the 2023 playoffs the year after going 1-3 as a starter in Philly, filling in for Hurts.
The Eagles have a strong history of developing and getting the best out of quarterbacks, from Michael Vick to Carson Wentz to the now Super Bowl champion, Jalen Hurts – and even prior Super Bowl champion, Nick Foles. But that does not guarantee any future success for Pickett, who has struggled to live up to his billing as the #20 overall pick in 2022.
What Does The Eagles’ QB Situation Look Like Beyond Jalen Hurts In 2025?
Having felt comfortable jettisoning Pickett in March, the Eagles will most likely put their faith in fan-favorite backup, Tanner McKee, who started in Week 18 of the 2024 season. In his sole start, McKee went 27/41 for 269 yards and 2 touchdowns, all good for a very impressive 100.6 quarterback rating.
Beyond McKee, the team has rookie sixth round pick, Kyle McCord; who had a strong season at Syracuse after transferring from Ohio State after the 2023 season; and former Browns fifth round pick, Dorian Thompson Robinson, who looks to be a long shot to make the final roster after struggling in minicamp.
Much has also come out as to the strong play from McCord, who started just two years in college but is impressing in his first showings in the pros.
