Atlanta Hawks Add Major Piece to Roster in Trade

The Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, and Brooklyn Nets agreed to a three-team deal Tuesday that saw the Celtics send center Kristaps Porzingis and a second-round pick to the Hawks, while Terance Mann and Atlanta’s No. 22 pick headed to the Nets, and finally, Georges Niang and a second-rounder landed with the Celtics, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania

After an inconsistent 2024–25 season marked by injuries and roster questions, the franchise is clearly shifting gears to address roster issues.

The Hawks have made a major splash this offseason as they look to return to the top of the Eastern Conference. If Porzingis stays healthy and integrates well, the Hawks could quickly become a dangerous team in the Eastern Conference.

Porzingis Brings Immediate Impact

Porzingis adds size, scoring, and rim protection to an Atlanta roster that has long lacked a true two-way big man with floor spacing ability. Known for his three-point shooting and shot-blocking prowess, the 7-foot-2 forward/center averaged nearly 20 points and 7 rebounds last season while shooting over 40% from beyond the arc.

The Hawks are optimistic that Porzingis’ unique skill set will pair well with All-Star point guard Trae Young. His presence opens up the floor, giving Young more room to operate and adding a reliable pick-and-pop option.

It’s still not clear if Porzingis will start or not as Onyeka Okongwu had a great season once he was inserted into the starting lineup. New general manager Onsi Saleh had a chance to talk to Trae and Onyeka recently about the offseason.

“Trae, me and him spoke the other day, and he’s just locked in for this season coming up,” Saleh told reporters Monday. “We’re both locked in, and we have a lot of optionality this summer.”

Young remains the face of the franchise. Still one of the league’s most dangerous offensive talents, Young is tasked with leading a younger, more balanced roster while continuing to evolve as a floor general. Questions remain about whether he’ll stay long-term or eventually be part of a bigger shakeup, but for now, he’s embracing the leadership role, mentoring young players, and setting the tone.

Hawks Building For Now

After missing the playoffs last season and finishing below .500, the Hawks’ front office made it clear they are only interested in making the playoffs and beyond this next season.

At the core of Atlanta’s new identity is its growing collection of young, high-upside players. French forward Zaccharie Risacher, the team’s recent lottery pick, has already generated buzz with his length, versatility, and defensive instincts. Paired with Dyson Daniels who is an emerging guard with elite perimeter defense and playmaking instincts.

Daniels was first team All-NBA Defense. The Hawks are laying the foundation for a dynamic, team that has length and can score at ease. Atlanta got better with this trade as they clearly won the trade between the three teams.
