The San Francisco Giants have some of the most iconic statues in the entire MLB in the surrounding area of their home stadium, Oracle Park.
Willie Mays, Willie McCovery, Orlando Cepeda, Gaylord Perry and Juan Marichal are enshrined in bronze for Giants fans to forever enjoy at the corner of 3rd and King.
News broke on Wednesday June 25, 2025 that a new statue will eventually be joining them, and it is going to depict one of the most controversial stars in San Francisco Giants history: outfielder Barry Bonds.
On the 95.7 The Game radio station’s show “The Morning Roast” with Joe Spadoni and Joe Shashky, Giants CEO Larry Baer hinted that there are already plans in the works for a Barry Bonds statue.
Barry is deserving of a statue and I would say, should be next up,” Baer said. “We don’t have the exact location and the exact date and the exact timing, but … It’s coming. All I can say is it’s coming.”
The Case For — And Against — A Statue for Bonds
Based purely on accolades, Barry Bonds is a no brainer to get a statue in San Francisco.
Bonds has the all-time home run record in the MLB with 762; he hit 586 of those with the Giants. He also has the all-time record for most home runs in a single season with 73 in 2001.
Bonds made 14 All-Star appearances and won 8 Gold Gloves, 7 MVPs and the batting title twice.
He is also the only player with 500 home runs and 500 steals in MLB history. He truly was the best all-around player of all time.
But of course, all of his numbers are tainted by the fact that he almost undoubtedly took performance-enhancing drugs during his MLB career, despite the fact that Bonds alleges he never intentionally did so.
The allegations, however, didn’t stop the Giants from retiring Bonds’s #25 jersey on August 11, 2018. The Giants are also giving away a Barry Bonds bobblehead to the first 20,000 fans who attend their game on July 12, 2025 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
As the franchise continues to grow in their celebration of Bonds post-career, honoring him with a statue makes more sense for them.
Bonds Has Been Around the Giants More
San Francisco Giants fans have seen a lot more of Barry Bonds at the field in recent years.
Most famously, he recently showed up to welcome superstar DH Rafael Devers to town, who the Giants traded for on June 15, 2015.
Bonds recently said that he’s helping out the Giants because it’s what his Godfather Willie Mays would have wanted.
“It’s me now saying, what would [Mays] do in this situation?” Bonds said. “What would he want me to do in this situation? And he’d want me at the ballpark all the time. He would want me to help the guys all the time. He’d want me to give back to this organization all the time. And so that’s what I do.”
What do you think, Giants fans? Are you excited for a Barry Bonds statue — and what pose do you want to see it sculpted in?
