Shooting near California mall injures officer as search for gunman underway

A shooting broke out near an outdoor mall in Santa Monica, California, injuring a police officer and setting off a manhunt.

Gunfire erupted at Santa Monica Place near the 3rd Street Promenade on Wednesday afternoon.

The officer who was injured was taken to a nearby hospital.

It was not immediately clear if the officer was shot, or the nature of the injury.

‘The suspect remains at large, and a coordinated search is underway,’ stated the Santa Monica Police Department on X (formerly Twitter).

Police have released a photo of a suspect wearing an ‘LA’ baseball cap, sunglasses, earphones around his neck. He is described as black and in his 30s, and was seen in a dark-colored jacket and black pants.

Anyone who spots the suspect is urged to call 911.

‘This remains an evolving situation,’ the police department said.

‘We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as we work to ensure the safety of everyone involved.’

Police have urged the public to avoid the area around 4th Street and Colorado Avenue in the downtown.

The LA Metro announced that the Santa Monica station was closed and that buses would instead operate.
