Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever are going through a rough patch of games. And with Caitlin Clark on the sidelines once again, their chances of having a successful season becomes more difficult.
The Fever went 1-3 in their last four games, suffering losses to the Golden State Valkyries, Las Vegas Aces and Los Angeles Sparks. Their lone win in that stretch was against the Seattle Storm on June 24.
Clark also suffered an injury in this span of games. Initially returning from a quad injury, the star guard sustained a groin injury in their last game against the Sparks.
Cunningham reflected on the team’s struggles after the loss on June 26. With the talent Indiana possesses, opponents have marked them on their respective schedules. Cunningham is aware of this, wanting the team to be better in fighting through adversity.
“We are circled on everybody’s schedule. No one likes us,” Cunningham said. “Everyone in our locker room—that’s the only type of people that we have that we can lean on, and we’ve got to be better in that area. We’ve got to stay disciplined, we have to stay focused, we need to get consistent, and we’ve got to lean on each other.”

Sophie Cunningham is right to point this out about the Fever’s opponents. They have struggled in their latest stretch of games, making it a point of urgency for the Indiana squad to bounce back as soon as possible.
The Fever continue to be productive on offense, averaging 81.8 points in their last four games. However, opponents have exploited their weaknesses on defense, having them concede 87 points per game. As a result, Indiana has a losing margin of 5.2 points per contest.
As for Caitlin Clark, her groin injury will be day-to-day as she misses Friday’s game against the Dallas Wings. Her absence will propel other players to step up for the Fever, needing a win on the road to get themselves back on track.
“The schedule thing? That’s just an excuse,” Cunningham also said on Thursday. “We’re in this league. We’re pros, and you’ve got to be a pro. [Friday], we’ve got to bring it.”
Indiana has a 7-8 record on the season, holding the fourth spot of the Eastern Conference standings. They are 0.5 games behind the Washington Mystics and three games behind the Atlanta Dream.
Following Friday’s matchup against the Wings at 7:30 p.m. ET, the Fever will prepare for their next road contest. They face the Minnesota Lynx on July 1 at 8 p.m. ET.
