Former Scout Expects Repeat Performance From Rams HC Sean McVay

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has won a Super Bowl, been to another, and has also won Coach of the Year in his career. As the Rams begin what they hope is a Super Bowl run in 2025, McVay could repeat his past exploits as well.

Former NFL player and scout Bucky Brooks picked McVay as his “long shot” selection for Coach of the Year.

McVay is +1800 to win the award, per Caesars Sportsbook & Casino and Brooks.

“It’s time for the football world to once again acknowledge the offensive wizard as one of the best team-builders in the game. After the Rams overcame slow starts in each of the past two seasons to earn playoff berths, perhaps McVay will walk away with honors for his work with a team that could steamroll through the division from the jump this time around,” Brooks wrote on June 27.

“The coach’s superb management skills should shine as he chalks up wins utilizing a complementary approach that binds the spectacular offense with a gritty defense and special-teams unit to outduel opponents.”

McVay and the Rams have won 10 games in back-to-back seasons, and just two of his eight seasons have fallen short of double-digit victories.

Rams’ Offense Must Step Up to Fuel Sean McVay’s COTY Campaign

Brooks pointed to the Rams’ revamped plethora of weapons around Matthew Stafford at McVay’s disposal as a play-caller. Newcomer Davante Adams joins fellow wideout Puka Nacua as Stafford’s top perimeter options.

The Rams also drafted tight end Terrance Ferguson to play alongside veteran Tyler Higbee and added Jarquez Hunter to the backfield helmed by 2023 Pro Bowler Kyren Williams.

Brooks called them a “high-flying” group.

The Rams’ offense ranked 20th in scoring and 15th in yards in 2024. They ranked in the top 10 in scoring three times in McVay’s first five seasons at the helm and had another campaign in which they ranked 11th.

However, they have ranked in the 20s in two of the past three seasons, with an eight-place finish in 2023 the exception.

Likewise, the Rams finished in the top 10 in total offense in three straight seasons.

The group did the same in four of McVay’s first five seasons as Rams HC. They also had an 11th-place finish in 2020. The Rams ranked 32nd in 2022 and seventh in 2027 before finishing 15th last season, though they can help themselves.

Rams Expected to Start Fast in 2025

A faster start could help, with McVay and the Rams going 1-4 to begin the 2024 regular season and 9-3 after.

The Athletic’s Jacob Robinson expects the Rams to be better early in 2025.

“The Rams should avoid having to chase a playoff position, thanks to addressing every major need,” Robinson wrote on June 2. “A rejuvenated Davante Adams, continuity along the offensive line and improving the interior defensive line could help this team make another Super Bowl run.”

Notably, Bill Belichick is the last coach to win COTY and lead his team to the Super Bowl, and he did it in 2003. Historically speaking, the Rams will win the Super Bowl or McVay will win the award, but both happening is highly unlikely.

McVay winning COTY in 2025 would make him the fifth winner in Rams’ franchise history. He is alreadythe first since Dick Vermeil in 1999.
